im trying to figure out the best way to achieve a flat black look on my Harley's gas tank, oil tank and fenders but want something fuel safe and something that holds up. would powerdcoating be the way to go for that or would it be possible to paint and achieve this? thanks..btw its a 74 ironhead sportster xlh

same color/coating just a different fender to show the close up results.

that’s all powder right there. Powder coating is a poly plastic coating, so its a lot more resistant to fuel than a paint will ever be. you still need to be careful naturally, but its better than paint that’s for sure.

Price is about the same as paint because of the prep time, instead of scuff and paint its a strip to 100% metal, light sand blast to profile and then coat. looking at around $350-400 to coat a pair of fenders, tank and oil tank. Oil tank and fuel tank need to be empty and evac'd so i don’t make a bomb in my oven. i can explain that process to you later.

the only downside to powder vs paint on bike tins... body work. if there are any dents or dings I cant powdercoat over bondo. There is a product called all metal high temp that "can" withstand the temps (400f) to powdercoat but it sands like concrete and is a bitch to block out body work wise, aka cost goes up from that $350-400 mark if that’s needed and I have yet to use the product under powder work personally so I cant guarantee results right off the bat but I would practice on a spare part prior to your work but I need to make you aware of that first off.

sounds good. once they are blasted you will know if any body work was ever done on them. If there was I can shoot them with hot rod black paint as another option.
